WEC 42: Torres vs Bowles - weigh in results, bettling line, and my picks...

Hey everyone! I don’t have a lot of time to blog today about the WEC 42: Torres vs Bowles event because I’m going to have a bit of a Sunday Funday before the fights, but I did want to weigh in on a few things.

Here’s the weigh-in results courtesy of MMAjunkie.com
MAIN CARD
• Champ Miguel Torres (134) vs. Brian Bowles (134)
• Joseph Benavidez (135) vs. Dominick Cruz (135)
• Danny Castillo (156) vs. Ricardo Lamas (155)
• Jeff Curran (136) vs. Takeya Mizugaki (135)
PRELIMINARY CARD
• Leonard Garcia (145) vs. Jameel Massouh (146)
• Fredson Paixao (145) vs. Cole Province (146)
• Marcus Hicks (159)* vs. Shane Roller (156)^
• Phil Cardella (155) vs. Ed Ratcliff (155)
• John Hosman (135) vs. Rani Yayha (136)
• Rafael Dias (145) vs. Diego Nunes (145)
• L.C. Davis (145) vs. Javier Vazquez (146)
• - Hicks registered 159 pounds on his only attempt to make weight. NSAC Executive Director Keith Kizer informed MMAjunkie.com the camps elected to hold the bout as a catchweight contest. Hicks was also fined 15 percent of his show money, which will be awarded to Roller.
^ - Roller weighed 157 pounds on his first attempt, but made the 156-pound limit after removing his fight shorts.

And here are the odds from BetonFighting.com
• BRIAN BOWLES +280 vs MIGUEL TORRES -340
• DOMINICK CRUZ +220 vs JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ -280
• DANNY CASTILLO +175 vs RICARDO LAMAS -215
• JEFF CURRAN +165 vs TAKEYA MIZUGAKI -205
• JAMEEL MASSOUGH +375 vs LEONARD GARCIA -525
• COLE PROVINCE +130 vs FREDSON PAIXAO -160
• PHIL CARDELLA +220 vs ED RATCLIFF -280
• JOHN HOSMAN +500 vs RANI YAHYA -700
• RAFAEL DIAS +325 vs DIEGO NUNES -425
• JAVIER VAZQUEZ -115 vs LC DAVIS -115
• SHANE ROLLER -155 vs MARCUS HICKS +125

Now to understand the odds, think in terms of $100 units. For instance, if you were betting on Brian Bowles, you would bet $100 and if he wins, you would win $280 and if you were to bet on Miguel Torres you would have to bet $340 to win $100. There’s 11 fights tonight, that’s a lot for a WEC card. I like when leagues stack up their cards, it definitely benefits the fans. I don’t know a lot about some of these guys, but I’ll comment on the ones I do and who I would pick if I were betting (which I no longer do).

BRIAN BOWLES +280 vs MIGUEL TORRES -340
This is the main event and should be a very exciting fight. Bowles is coming in undefeated and has finished every one of his opponents. His go to move is the guillotine choke. Torres is considered one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. He’s won 17 in a row and is very well-rounded. I think Bowles is in for a tough one here, but I also think that this will be the toughest guy that Torres has faced in the WEC so he’s no lock. Miguel should be able to win a decision or get a mid fight submission, but I think the line should be around 2 to 1 and not almost 3.5 to 1 so if I were betting, I’d take Bowles and the high payout. By the way Bowles is sporting a new sleeved tattoo. I’ll be interested to check that out tonight too.
My Pick: Bowles +280, 1 unit to win 2.8 units

DOMINICK CRUZ +220 vs JOSEPH BENAVIDEZ -280
I’ve never been that impressed with Cruz. I don’t think that he’s as good as his record indicates. Benavidez comes in undefeated and from the Urijah Faber training camp. His wild but contained fighting style is fun to watch as well. I think this line is set right and Benavidez wins in a fairly easy unanimous decision.
My Pick: Benavidez -280, 2.8 units to win 1 unit

JEFF CURRAN +165 vs TAKEYA MIZUGAKI -205
I don’t know much about Mizugaki, other than he gave champ Miguel Torres a good run for his money in the last fight. I don’t really understand why he’s the favorite and almost a 2:1 favorite at that. Curran is no slouch, a former pro boxer and black belt in jiu-jitsu, so he’s more than capable of winning this one. I’m also not that impressed with Japanese fighters, I think they are pretty over-rated when compared to their American counterparts. I like getting Curran as an underdog. I don’t think Mizugaki will finish Curran, but Curran can finish Mizugaki, so I’ll roll with my boy Kyle’s boy, “Big Frog” Jeff Curran.
My Pick: Curran +165, 1 unit to win 1.65 units

JAMEEL MASSOUGH +375 vs LEONARD GARCIA -525
I’ve never heard of Massough, but the oddsmakers don’t seem that impressed with him. That’s a lot of chalk to lay on Garcia, but he is one of the best in the 145 division and should be able to win. Betting that much would make me nervous, but then again it could be easy money. Not going to do much analysis here, I’ll take Garcia and lay the chalk.
My Pick: Garcia -525, 525 units to win 1 unit

I don’t know or care that much about the other fights so I’ll save the time in going into them. So here’s my final picks…

• Bowles +280, 1 unit to win 2.8 units
• Benavidez -280, 2.8 units to win 1 unit
• Curran +165, 1 unit to win 1.65 units
• Garcia -525, 525 units to win 1 unit

I’ll check back in later tonight to see how I did and comment about what I thought of the fights. For those of you who don’t know about the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting), it’s owned by the UFC and features the lighter weight fighters. They have 3 divisions, a bantamweight (135), featherweight (145), and lightweight (155). The fights will air on the Versus Network at 6pm. Don’t miss them. They put on a great show!
