Brett, you won't go away, but since you're here...

Brett Favre returns to the NFL, Yippee?

I’m not going to spend a lot of time talking about Favre being back in the league, the guy obviously won’t go away. I don’t mind that he’s back in the league, I really don’t. I just don’t like how he plays this little game every single year, “I’m retiring, wait a second I want to play again!” I can’t understand why he does it for any other reason than he wants the attention. It’s pretty ridiculous and everyone is pretty fed up with it. Well since he’s back I might as well talk about his fantasy value.

I think Favre has enough in the tank to make an impact and be a low end fantasy starter (in a 12 team league) or high end backup. However, Favre’s biggest impact will be the level he will raise those around him to. Favre is not the QB he once was, but he is still better than Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson… combined. The person that will benefit the most is Adrian Peterson. I’ve never been big on AP, don’t know why, just haven’t. I know he’s good, I just like some guys and don’t like others without much explanation. However, AP has managed to put up good fantasy numbers despite the trash he has had playing at QB in the last few years. Without a threat in the passing game, opposing defenses stack 8 defenders in the box making it harder for AP to get production… but he still did. Defenses will not be able to do that with Favre at QB. If AP can stay healthy, this will be his most productive season to date. I didn’t think he deserved the #1 overall pick a week ago, but I do now. I still love Maurice Jones-Drew (MJD) and Matt Forte but AP is the safer pick at this point. As far as the passing game, this makes Bernard Berrian a WR I would target and Vishante Shiancoe at TE. Favre loves the TE and from what I’m told, Shiancoe has some serious game so I think Shiancoe could be a top breakout candidate with Favre in the mix. Berrian is primed for his best season as well with Favre at the helm. Favre has turned countless WRs from good players to stars and Berrian just might be the next guy.

Hmm, you may be worth a damn after all Brett.

I nab the “mystery” player, Player!

Yesterday there was a pretty big delay in my real draft so I took the night off from blogging. With almost 12 rounds in the book, let’s take a look at my last 2 picks. After 10 rounds, here’s how my team is looking…

In the 11th and 12th rounds I’m going to target some WR’s who can have a chance to fill in as the #3 on a week to week basis and a fill in #2. This is how the 11th round went down.

Thoughts on Round 11

There was a run on defenses… good, more upside picks for me! I don’t want a defemse this early anyways. Anyways, I didn’t expect Maclin to fall to me here. I almost picked him at 9.12, 10.1. He’s the player I was pegging as the “mystery” player in Monday’s blog. I have been back and forth on Maclin all summer. I loved him, then he held out and I was off him, but he’s back on my radar especially as a #4 WR. Yes, Maclin is the team’s current #4 WR, but there’s still 3 weeks of preseason play. Plus I picked Maclin with the expectation that he probably wouldn’t crack my starting lineup until the 2nd half of the season so I have some time while he develops into a starter. If Maclin has some strong preseason games then his value jumps exponentially. Will that happen in the preseason? I don’t know, but Maclin makes an impact sooner or later for a few reasons… 1) Current starter Kevin Curtis has never been a player that I’ve like that much over the year and he doesn’t have that much game left so Maclin will have every opportunity to supplant him as the starter. 2) The Eagles traded up in the draft to get him. You don’t do that if you don’t really like a guy and intend to use him as soon as possible, and 3) the guy may be too good to keep off the field. His coach, Andy Reid, is an offensive genius. He will find a way to use Maclin effectively.

Round 12 Thoughts

I wanted to get the best overall player here, but was leaning WR. There were 3 players that I was considering with this pick. I’m going to target the other 2 with my next 2 picks as they are still on the board. I went with Galloway. Yes, Galloway is old, but in 2007 he had a nice year with a very average QB in Jeff Garcia. I’m not taking last year into consideration because I think he was riddled with injuries. But this year he has the one and only Tom Brady at QB. Jabar Gafney had some nice games with Brady as the Patriots #3 and Galloway is way better than Gafney, even at his current age. Could Galloway be the top sleeper this year? Probably not, but he should have some nice games. I will plan to play him as my #3 WR. Between him and Morgan and Maclin later in the year, I should be ok at WR3.
